Background

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an intergovernmental organisation established in 2009 with the mandate to promote the widespread adoption and sustainable use of all sources of renewable energy.

This includes bioenergy, geothermal energy, hydropower, solar, wind and ocean energy. At present, IRENA has 168 Members (167 States and the European Union) that acceded to its Statute, and 16 additional States in the process of accession and actively engaged.

Country Engagement and Partnerships Division (CEP) leads the work with countries. It supports them in the development and implementation of national and regional renewable energy strategies, by contextualizing the knowledge being developed in the other three divisions of IRENA, to the national requirements.

Its activities enable a systematic overview of country and regional needs, experiences and trends to help facilitate cross-fertilization of best practices between countries and regions, and shape IRENA’s future programmatic priorities.

IRENA has developed the Renewables Readiness Assessment (RRA), a country led process, with a comprehensive tool for assessing key conditions for renewable energy technology development and deployment and the actions necessary to further create an enabling framework for renewable energy deployment. IRENA has carried out RRAs in Centra Asia region, including Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan.

Objective and Particular functions

Under the overall guidance and the immediate supervision of the Head of Regions in CEP Division, and under the oversight of the relevant regional officers the intern will be expected to carry out the following tasks:

Support the coordination and implementation of the IRENA’s activities in Central Asia region, Investment Forums as well as various regional initiatives and in particular activities to be implemented under the MoU with Korean Energy Agency (KEA)

Support the implementation of the Renewables Readiness Assessments in the region;
Support the coordination and implementation of NDC and LTS support in the region;
Support in identifying regional initiatives for promoting renewable energy deployment, forums and programmes, which could be effective platforms for collaboration in Central Asia in particular those under the MoU with KEA;

Research trends, key topics, emerging issues and national initiatives related to renewable energy development and climate change in Central Asia;

Support the stakeholder outreach and coordination in the context of IRENA’s country engagement, collaborative framework, practitioner network/Energy Transition Connect (ETC), country framework agreements, project facilitation and regional initiatives;

Assist in the organization of consultative workshops, investment forums, collaborative platforms, ETC and technical meetings ensuring effective participation of key stakeholders, experts and partners.

Support the planning and coordination of 2022-23 Work Programme of the Division and contribute to its successful implementation;

Support the delivery of support services to countries in all regions under the IRENA-UNDP LoA for 2022-23;

Support the planning, delivery and reporting of activities under the MoU with KEA including developing implementation and budget plans as needed;

Support the efforts by CEP across all regions to develop a pipeline of projects for finance facilitation through IRENA platforms such as Climate Investment Partnership (CIP), Energy Transition Accelerator Finance (ETAF) Platform, Risk Mitigation Facility etc.
Perform other related duties, as required.

Learning Areas

During the internship period, the successful applicant will develop an understanding of the role played by IRENA in the relevant regions and will have the opportunity to become familiar with RRAs, regional publications, capacity building events which are underway, as well as the engagement and coordination with the regional partners for the successful implementation of these and other activities.

The applicant will develop analytical, research and communications skills while learning how IRENA engages with member countries for the delivery of technical assistance that helps accelerate the adoption of renewable technologies, decarbonize their economies and guide them towards an energy transition.

Timeframe

The internship is for a period of six months. The exact start date/period will be determined based on the availability of the intern and the needs of the Division. The maximum duration of the internship is nine months, subject to the intern’s continued university enrolment and performance.

Minimum Requirements

The candidate must meet the following requirements:

Education: The candidate should be enrolled in a post-graduate programme, or in their final year of undergraduate programme in the field energy, engineering, management, economics, renewable energy systems.

Recent graduates will also be included in the internship programme provided the start date of the internship is less than six months from completion of studies.

Experience/skills: The candidate should be aware of and understand energy and/or development economics, climate change and renewable energy technologies; possess experience of drafting, preparing and reviewing of reports. Relevant knowledge of policy processes and renewable resource development is desirable.

Languages: Excellent command of both written and spoken English is essential. Russian language skills would be an advantage but not essential.

Demonstrate good writing and communication skills.
Demonstrate solid teamwork, planning and organising, professionalism.
Be able to work in a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environment.

Internship Conditions

Interns of IRENA are not considered to be staff members. The selected intern will work on a full-time basis (40 hours per week) remotely as per the working hours of the Duty station in Abu Dhabi, UAE.
