About the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Climate Action Senior Manager (Net Zero policy & Strategy) to join our client, a leading global FMCG company with Brands such as Dove, Knorr, Persil & Magnum, based at their prestigious facility in 100VE, London.

The successful candidate will be expected to work from the office on a Monday and one other day, the remainder of the week will be remote working. Candidate would be expected to be flexible.

This is a full-time temporary role to start ASAP until the end of April 2024 working a 36.25-hour week and is paying up to £79,000 per annum, pro rata, depending on experience.

We have set a range of ambitious targets to reduce emissions in our operations and value chain and embed climate action into our divisions and brands. In March 2021, the UL Board published our Climate Transition Action Plan, setting out details of the actions we will take to drive action in this area. An updated plan is in development for the 2024 AGM.

The role our team plays

To support this agenda, the Sustainability Function, and the Environment team within it, provide strategic thought leadership, global partnerships, advocacy capabilities, and subject matter expertise to support the Business Groups and Functions, including UL Business Operations, in driving change at scale across the value chain.

We are looking for a passionate person to join the team to lead our net zero policy and strategy.

The successful candidate will work alongside our Global Sustainability Senior Manager – Climate Advocacy – who leads our public policy advocacy, complementing this work by leading the development of internal policies and strategies in support of our climate targets.

About This Role: Climate Action Senior Manager (Net Zero Policy & Strategy) – Unilever, UK, £79,000 per annum

This role combines elements of sustainability strategy, policy, and partnerships at a senior level, supporting both the internal delivery of climate targets and helping to shape the external standards that set the context for that delivery.

Strategy

  • Provide strategic guidance to the operational business teams charged with delivering against UL’s climate targets:
  • Net Zero by 2039
  • Halve the emissions of our products along the value chain by 2030
  • Reduce our operational emissions by 100% by 2030.
  • Support the evolution of these targets in response to the rapidly changing external context.
  • Closely collaborate with colleagues in sustainability, supply chain, procurement, communications, and global brands. Serve as the central knowledge expert on net zero strategy, providing ongoing strategic counsel to the business groups and functional teams on climate action.

Policy

  • Lead cross-functional teams of internal stakeholders to develop UL’s climate-related positions and internal policies on key issues and standards relevant to the achievement of UL’s climate targets e.g. carbon credits, net zero, GHG Protocol, Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use (AFOLU) emissions accounting, Science Based Targets.
  • Bring significant depth, expertise and judgement to those processes including up to date insights on the changing external landscape in a way that allows UL to respond quickly.

Partnerships & Stakeholder Engagement

Lead engagement with partners and associations where collective efforts are required to deliver internal strategies.

DTU Tenure Track Researcher or Senior Researcher in renewable energy value chains and local industrial development – DTU Wind, Denmark

This may include net zero policy and strategy working groups in the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, Exponential Roadmap Initiative, World Economic Forum, Consumer Goods Forum, Voluntary Carbon Market Integrity Initiative.

Key Skills/ Experience Desired: Climate Action Senior Manager (Net Zero Policy & Strategy) – Unilever, UK, £79,000 per annum

In-depth knowledge and understanding of climate action as it relates to business

Knowledge of Science Based Targets Initiative and other relevant climate governance initiatives

Knowledge of industry groups and stakeholders in the climate action/net zero space.

Fluency in navigating the issues tensions between carbon credits and carbon markets, and the imperative to achieve real reductions in emissions without offsetting.

Strong stakeholder management and interpersonal skills

Analytical and systems thinking

Ability to simplify complex policy issues into actionable guidance for a business audience

Excellent writing skills (experience of writing English language briefing papers for C-level executives particularly valuable)

Influencing and working in a complex matrix organisation

Understanding the full business value chain
