The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an inter-governmental organisation, headquartered in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi, mandated to promote the adoption and continuous use of all forms of renewable energy sources in the pursuit of sustainable development, energy access, energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity.

IRENA’s mission is to play a leading role in the ongoing transformation of the global energy systems as a centre of excellence for knowledge and innovation, a global voice of renewable energy, a network hub for all stakeholders and a source of advice and support for countries. 

At present, IRENA has 168 Members (167 States and the European Union) that acceded to its Statute, and 16 additional States in the process of accession and actively engaged.

Solar Waves of Change: Revolutionizing Energy Access in Rural South Africa

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Advisor to the Director-General, the Associate Programme Officer, will perform the following duties:

Support the work of the Office of the Director-General including: preparation of internal and external meetings, missions, speaking engagements and participation in conferences; preparation of briefing notes, talking points, speeches, substantive information and files; and preparation of supporting documents, as well as related correspondence;

Assist in facilitating day-to-day matters related to work of the Office of the Director-General, including communicating internally throughout the Agency, and externally with offices of high level representatives of government, civil society and private sector;

Assist in identifying key strategic issues and priorities which require the attention of the Director General. 

Develop and maintain an archive of substantive information relevant to the Director-General’s activities.

Ensure timely follow-up to the Director General’s meetings and missions, including preparation of meeting minutes, and the effective dissemination of pertinent information to relevant parties; 

Ensure the timeliness, accuracy and quality of documents prepared; 

Provide substantive and administrative support to the Director-General while on mission travel including preparation of meeting notes and summary of issues, as necessary.  

Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications: IRENA Associate Programme Officer – Office of the Director-General: USD 50,377 to USD 58,737 annually

Education: Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in international relations, political science, management, economics, finance or engineering. A first university degree in combination with at leaves two years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Experience: A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in international organizations, strategy consulting, sustainable development or related field is required. Diplomatic experience or experience in the cabinet of the head of an international organization or member of government is desirable.

Experience in dealing with global energy policy related issues would be an asset. 

Language: Excellent command of written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of other languages is desirable. Good drafting skills are essential.

[1] IRENA provides similar ICSC benefits and entitlements, including rental subsidy, education grant (for school aged children), annual leave, health insurance, provident fund, etc. as would be applicable.

[2] The post adjustment is a variable component that is adjusted periodically to reflect changes in the cost of living in a duty station. Post adjustment multiplier for Abu Dhabi duty station is currently 72.7%, determined by the International Civil Service Commission and subject to change without prior notice.
