Your role: Portfolio Officer Energy – West Africa and the Middle East, Northern Africa – FMO

Due to a vacancy opening, we are looking for a Portfolio Officer for the West-Africa and the MENA team. The Portfolio Officer will be expected to deepen relationship management with our clients as well as to enhance the impact that FMO has in the region.

The Portfolio Officer we are looking for is expected to:

Manage a portfolio of clients in several countries, identifying potential (financial) risks, including breaches and non-compliances;

Build relationships with clients in the portfolio;

Travel in line with the supervision requirements of the portfolio;

Identify opportunities for repeat transactions and capacity development opportunities with clients;

Lead the execution of repeat transactions (in some cases under the supervision of Senior Investment/Senior Portfolio Officers);

Coaches and supervises the (Senior) Portfolio Analysts in the team;

Be responsible for the quality and timely processing of portfolio related documents;

Provide input and support to the Senior Portfolio Officer on portfolio quality, limits, trends, and other portfolio related matters;

Coordinate with key internal stakeholders, i.e. environmental and social experts, fund managers, insurance experts, legal department, special operations, treasury, mid-office, agency desk, and impact reporting team;

Proactively provide the (Senior) Investment Officers and Associates with advice and input derived from portfolio management;

Help to strengthen the impact management framework within the regional Energy portfolio.

FMO has 3 strategic sectors: Energy, Agribusiness and Financial Institutions. The Energy department has been a front-runner in implementing the sustainability framework within FMO.  

Within the department, there is a strong focus on renewable energy (solar, wind and hydro power) but it has also shown to be innovative while exploring new subsectors such as off-grid energy solutions, transmission and distribution and storage solutions.

The department focusses on senior debt and mezzanine finance. At the same time, it maintains close relations with the energy colleagues from the Private Equity department.

FMO aims to build a substantial portfolio of sustainable investments that realize steady and market-driven returns. The total Energy portfolio amounts to approximately EUR 2.5 billion. Annual new commitments amount to around EUR 400 million.

The department comprises of around 50 professionals, including 18 nationalities, divided over 4 regional teams: Latin America and the Caribbean, West-Africa and the Middle East, Northern Africa, East and Southern Africa, and Asia and Eastern Europe.

Teams work across two sub teams: a Business Development group focusing on new business in the region and a Portfolio Management group responsible for managing the existing clients. 

The department is supported by a pool of insurance, legal, KYC, and environmental & social officers.

Your background: Portfolio Officer Energy – West Africa and the Middle East, Northern Africa – FMO

Educational background and experience

Master’s degree, preferably in economics, finance, engineering or business administration;

Experience with project financing in the infrastructure and/or the Energy sector(s);

7-10 years of experience with investments and/or portfolio management in emerging markets (familiarity with West-Africa and the MENA is a strong plus);

Experience in impact management in an infrastructure and/or energy context;

Client-oriented mindset;

Fluency in French is a plus.

Ability to operate in a culturally diverse environment;

Ability to manage a relatively large number of clients at the same time; 

Ability to follow up on early warning signals at client, country and portfolio level.

What we offer you

We offer a competitive gross annual compensation (including holiday allowance), based on your experience.

Additionally, we also offer a range of other well-being benefits, including 31 holidays per year (with the option to sell/buy additional days), the opportunity to work remotely abroad for 60 days per year, an annual personal development budget of up to EUR 2,700 as well as a pension plan. Our hybrid work arrangement allows you to work both in the office and from home.
