About the Role: Head of Impact and Learning – Practical Action

This is a global role reporting to the Director of Impact, Influence and Innovation.

Practical Action are in the third year of our current strategy to 2025. Having defined and articulated the change we want to make happen in the world, you will be responsible for supporting our efforts to bring about change at scale within our existing programme, whilst working to develop a longer-term strategy to effectively measure and evaluate our progress.

You will do this by leading and developing a team of specialists, acting as Practical Action’s global lead on monitoring, evaluation and learning. You will drive thought leadership and build capability around best practice and systems thinking across our organisation.

You will provide the senior leadership team with an objective assessment of Practical Action’s impact as a group and our progress against the global strategy, with recommendations on ways to maximise our effectiveness.

Working collaboratively across functions, you will ensure that Regional and Country offices are supported in the operational use of our Programme Quality and Delivery Framework, regularly reviewing our approach to ensure it remains at the heart of programme design and strategic planning.

You will support Regional and Country Offices to develop strategic business plans, ensuring that our programme delivers the change we want to see by capturing, learning from and publishing robust evidence of progress.

This role will regularly bring together technical Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) expertise from across the organisation to promote the sharing of knowledge and establishing common ways of working and best practice towards high quality project design, implementation and review.

About you: Head of Impact and Learning – Practical Action

To be successful in the role, the ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate:

ESSENTIAL

  • Significant experience and proven leadership in the field of monitoring, evaluation and learning in an international development setting.
  • A strategic mindset with strong analytical skills and a well-developed understanding of systems thinking.

DESIRABLE

  • A strong understanding of and commitment to gender and diversity.
  • Strong understanding of data management systems, and the use of evidence and learning for both internal and external use in achieving change.
  • Excellent facilitation and leadership skills.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage a team of specialists to work to a group agenda.
  • Strong networking and representational skills working amongst peers in the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills in English, with a second language (French, Spanish, Arabic) desirable.
  • Empathy with Practical Action’s vision, mission and values.
  • Ability to travel up to 12 weeks per year.
  • Post-graduate degree in a relevant subject.
