Viet Nam’s current social-economic model contributes to high carbon emissions and environmental degradation, while increasing disaster risks and undermining opportunities for sustainable development: The country is at a critical juncture where policy choices on infrastructure, energy, urbanization, production and consumption will shape the success of its transition towards green, low-emission and climate-resilient development. Environmental degradation and pollution continue to impact livelihood opportunities and people’s health.

UNDP – Viet Nam partnership officially started in 1978. Since then UNDP has been working closely with the Government and other partners to expand the choices for people and ensure that everyone has equal access to opportunities to realize their full potentials.
Viet Nam’s current socio-economic model contributes to high carbon emissions and environmental degradation, while increasing disaster risks and undermining opportunities for sustainable development: Viet Nam ranks 25th (2018) in terms of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) and without changes to its carbon – intensive growth trajectory, Viet Nam will continue to be a major regional GHG emitter. The rapid increase of GHG emissions is attributable to the large portion of fossil fuel-based energy in the country’s energy mix, increased industrialization, and urbanization.
The primary driver limiting green growth is the country’s high reliance on fossil fuel energy, high energy intensity industries, and high per capita carbon emissions. The country is at a critical juncture where policy choices on infrastructure, energy, urbanization, production and consumption will shape the success of its transition towards green, low-emission and climate-resilient development. Environmental degradation and pollution continue to impact livelihood opportunities and people’s health.
Viet Nam is particularly vulnerable to climate change and already impacted by more irregular and intense climate variability and change, and is among the top ten countries in the world most affected by natural disasters and extreme weather events. The increasingly exposure of people and economic assets has been and will continue to be the major cause of long-term increases in economic losses from weather- and climate- related disasters.

The project “Scaling-up Integrated and Inclusive Waste Management Models through Empowering the Informal Sector and Fostering the Circular Economy” (DWP5C phase 2) has been implemented in Binh Dinh province. The project’s objective is to deploy and test a range of interventions including on the ground support interventions for IWWs, a sector-focused WM model in fisheries, and an ecosystem-level approach at innovating the value chain through a Material Recovery Facility (MRF), and then refining these models based upon the deployment and learning with a view to continued and scaled-up deployment supported by a programme of capacity development and knowledge creation, sharing and dissemination.
Viet Nam Circular Economy Hub (CE Hub) was jointly developed by MONRE and UNDP. The CE Hub is designed as a public-private partnership, and it is a place for dialogue and act as a bridge between existing initiatives and stakeholders in Viet Nam and globally. The CE Hub includes a web portal (https://vietnamcirculareconomy.vn/en/), which is available in Vietnamese and English, as well as organize training, workshops, and events to enhance dialogue, generate know-how, and mobilize collective action towards the CE transition.
Duties and Responsibilities: Climate Change Communications Intern – UNDP
Under overall guidance and direct supervision of the CCE Media and Communication Analyst, the National Intern is expected to undertake the following activities:
Design communication products for the CCE’s projects, especially the DWP5C phase 2 project and the CE Hub, including but not limited to infographics, research/knowledge papers, ppt presentations, reports, invitations, backdrop
Assist with the content creation for UNDP Climate Change and Environment (CCE), especially the CE Hub, online platforms (facebook, youtube, website) including producing video stories, video subtitle, infographic and photo stories
Exploring new ways of engaging young people in the social media platforms including running various types of contests and campaigns in the Facebook on relating topics on plastic, waste, environment, circular economy and climate change
Support the management of the Facebook feedback/commenting
Support with the livestream of events including by preparing the equipment and room and ensuring these are of high quality

Translating contents from English to Vietnamese or vise versa for digital and social media
Provide support in covering events and missions of the CCE Unit to ensure visibility on both mass media and social media
Support to organize the awareness raising campaigns/activities and public events/activities to promote the CCE’s activities and the DWP5C’s activities on waste segregation at source, waste management models such as the MRF in Binh Dinh, the model applicable for fishing boats to collect and bring plastic wastes back to the shore
Support to document the media clippings and share news on plastic, waste, environment, circular economy and climate change related topics
Take photos at the CCE’s events.
Performs other activities as assigned.

The intern must keep confidential any and all unpublished information made known during the course of the internship and not publish any reports or paper on the basis of information obtained except with the written approval and authorization of UNDP.

Bachelor’s degree (if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation) or final year in communications or journalism.
Experience/ Skills
Experience in digital communications is an asset.
Experience in graphic design using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop is a must.
Good skill in taking photos is a must.
Knowledge and proficient user of Microsoft Office and Adobe software
