Work Location: Pretoria

Expected Duration: 6 months

Duties and Responsibilities

ORGANIZATIONAL SETTING: UNEP is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development with the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. This internship is located in the Pretoria office and reports to the head of office, of the subregional office in South Africa.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the intern is to respond to the country needs and priorities, intended to attain a responsive United Nations that delivers better results for People and Planet, with more sustainability, higher efficiency and integrated support .

The intern will perform the following functions:

  • Support project management, including backstopping implementation of project activities and monitoring for the work undertaken by UNEP in the SADC region.
  • Assist with the organisation of meetings and outreach events, and high-level Forums; (Workshops, Webinars, Retreats, etc.) and World Environment Day (WED) commemorations, for Environmental Sustainability by preparing meeting agendas, summaries, minutes and follow up communications as required.
  • Support Advocacy Campaigns (Education/Awareness/Sensitizations/Trainings) geared to elevate environmental issues to the same level/s as social and economic issues in each of the 16 SADC Member States.
  • Developing necessary background materials, sourcing appropriate speakers and report writing.
  • Assist in preparing concept notes and short briefings across UNEP’s programmatic areas.
  • Assist in the development of communication and outreach materials such as stories, social media posts and newsletters highlighting the work and results of UNEP South Africa Office.
  • Undertake any additional duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the Head of UNEP South Africa office, and in accordance with the Interns’ interests and experience.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent);

c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Applicants must be pursuing qualifications in an area of study that can significantly contribute to the responsibilities outlined and overall work of UNEP South Africa Office including:

  • Be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Possess good report writing skills;
  • Demonstrate good organizational and pleasant interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrate interest in issues related to environmental sustainability;
  • Experience communication and outreach a plus;
  • Have demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views;
  • Have a keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter. Studies in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Policy, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resource Management, International Relations or any other relevant field.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For internship fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
